this will be my first film review. don't expect too much since i'm not a pro and not really good at beautiful words. just read it and do not complain.
if people ask me, what's my fave films of all time? then "welcome to dongmakgol" will be one of them.
it is a korean movie released in 2005, but i watched it in 2018 or 2017. i found the film on viu unintentionally, i scrolled the app on its film section, then this film poster looked interesting, so i tried to watch it. it turned out really good, suprisingly!
the film background is korean war which took place in 1950 if i'm not mistaken. i'm sure you'll get surprised when you see it, because you won't find what you think about when you hear the word "war". i mean, this film is about peace and innocence, and what makes me happy is it's full of comedy. that's why i love it.
dongmakgol is a small village, i'm not sure where is it located, like in south or north korea, but it's still in korea. it happens to be in the middle of the jungle where people wouldn't know if there would be a village.
the story begins when the armies (north and south) are at war and they get lost in the middle of nowhere until they're brought to dongmakgol by the locals. the armies are like shocked when they meet there since they're enemies. so they point their guns to each other while the locals are confused because they're asked to put the hands up. but, what i mean by "confused" is they don't know about the gun. like they never have seen it in their whole life. so they aren't even afraid at all, they're just confused why they need to put their hands up? they don't feel threatened at all. funny, huh? i know.
from my perspective, that happens because they don't know about the outside world so they don't even know that there was a war going on out there. what they know is just about how to live and eat and play. they live a joyful life. that what makes them innocents. you'll be happy if you see the way they live.
seeing their behavior definitely makes the armies flustered like what the hell is going on?! however, day by day, while living the dongmakgol's life, the armies find what peace really is in the end. but this doesn't mean the korean war stop, it's just between those armies in dongmakgol.
if you wanna know the story, just go see it.
so yeah, i love how the story teaches me that in a life full of war, we can still find peace like a buried treasure. the most important is this film burst me into laughter.
Rate 8/10
